Fall and winter are darker times of year, and in the garden that means putting an emphasis on bright, light colors. Lime green is always a great choice for that – it fits in with all other colors, and brightens your beds during the darkest days. That’s why we love the Cool Glow® Lime Nandina – and we know you will love it too. Through spring and summer this compact evergreen is a rich dark green, but with the coldest weather it transforms into a bright, bold lime-green accent. It is moderately fast growing, so doesn’t take long to become a bold statement, growing about 4 feet tall and wide, ultimately probably reaching 6 feet. Also called ‘sacred bamboo’, it does have a bamboo-like look, with large leaves divided into many small leaflets, each one leathery and smooth. It has a great look as a foliage plant and tolerates a wide range of light and soil conditions too. Use it in any shrub bed, in everything from the most formal to the wildest garden, and in Asian-themed spaces too. It also makes a great informal hedge or screen, hiding foundations and old fences with grace and beauty. It rarely if ever flowers, but older plants may produce sprays of small white flowers in spring, which rarely make seeds, so never become a problem.
The Cool Glow® Lime Nandina will grow in almost all light conditions, from full sun to all-day light shade – the best foliage colors develop with some sun. It grows easily in any well-drained soil, both acidic and alkaline, and although young plants should be watered regularly, it is amazingly drought tolerant once established, and a good choice for drier soils. It is hardy into zone 6, although there, some stems may die in winter, keeping it as a more compact plant. Deer don’t eat it and it doesn’t have any pests or diseases to worry about, but avoid wet spots. It needs no trimming or pruning, beyond removing any dead stems from winter in zone 6. You can keep older plants shorter by simply cutting out the tallest canes at ground level in spring.
