Like shadows passing over the landscape on a cloudy day, the Cloudy Sky Dahlia features moody red-pink tones, fading to lighter pinks and white towards the center of the full, rounded bloom. The petals are broad, tapering to points, creating a full bloom with a flaring look – it’s the class of blooms called ‘Decorative’ by dahlia fanatics. Growing into a plant 3 feet tall in the season, it’s an abundant bloomer, starting in early summer and still going strong in October. It looks great in your garden beds, and the blooms have longer stems that are perfect for cutting. As well, it could be planted in a large tub or box, and grown on a terrace or patio, for a moody, yet bright, highlight. Just as easy as any other variety, move into the more exotic, with this abundant bloomer.
Plant the Cloudy Sky Dahlia in full sun for the most abundant blooming, although it will take a couple of hours of shade if it must. Grow it in well-drained soil you have enriched with plenty of compost, and water regularly. It isn’t eaten by deer and is generally free of significant pest or disease issues. If you are in zone 6 or warmer, cut down the stems once they are killed by frost, and spread a little mulch over the roots. It will resprout in spring. In colder zones lift the plant, let it dry, and remove soil and dead foliage. Store for winter in a paper bag in a cool, humid place, and re-pot in March, planting out once the risk of frost has gone. Deadheading is helpful to encourage continuous blooming.
