Chives are one of the most useful fresh herbs to grow, and also one of the most attractive, especially when in flower. But they have a nasty habit of producing many seeds that spring up everywhere. Now, forget that problem, because the Chivette Allium is just as tasty and beautiful, but it doesnāt produce viable seed, so it isnāt going to sprout annoyingly in every crack and corner. It produces a profuse number of flower spikes 12 inches tall, carrying 1-inch diameter flower heads of a gorgeous lilac-purple. The cylindrical leaves are bright, fresh green and great chopped into salads, omelets and so much more. The flower heads are edible too, and a beautiful topping on a salad bowl. Grow it with your other herbs, in the garden, in a pot or a window box. Plant it as an edging in a cottage-style garden, or among perennial flowers ā always gorgeous in bloom, and so useful.
Plant the Chivette Allium in full sun, although in hotter areas some afternoon shade is fine. Grows well in any well-drained soil of all kinds, and in pots and planters. Normally pest and disease-free, and avoided by deer and rabbits. Pluck out spent flower heads for tidiness, or cut back and let the plant re-sprout. Cut back to an inch tall in late fall or late winter, depending on snow cover.
