Butter & Sugar Siberian Iris

Siberian Iris are among the easiest of perennials to grow in all but poor, dry soils, and don’t have any of the problems some other kinds of iris can suffer from. So you can treat them like any other perennial, Most are shades of blue, but the Butter and Sugar Siberian Iris is a total color-break from that, with bright, cheerful blooms that blend white and shades of yellow into a glorious confection. Standing a little more than 2 feet tall in bloom, it’s one of the shorter varieties, so perfect for smaller spaces and modern gardens. Blooming after the bearded iris, it extends the season, and in its own right is a wonderful late-spring flower. The foliage is rich green, narrow and grassy, looking handsome all through summer. A wonderful plant to grow among other perennials; among low shrubs; as a vertical accent anywhere; and especially beside water, which reflects its natural home.

With incredible resistance to cold, you can grow the Butter and Sugar Siberian Iris even in zone 3. Yet it also grows well in warmer zones, all the way into zone 8. Plant in full sun, in rich, moist soils for the very best results, but tough and reliable even in average soils, as long as they aren’t too dry. Doesn’t suffer from pests or diseases and isn’t eaten by deer. Just trim back the foliage to a few inches tall in late fall – no other work is needed, although you can remove dead flower stalks for a cleaner look if you want to.
