In hot zones Agapanthus are popular garden perennials, with tall stems topped with a ball of blue or white flowers. A great choice for flowering in the second-half of summer, they need some room, and gardeners in the north can’t really grow them. None of that is true if you grow the Bridal Veil® Agapanthus. The charming small version flowers just a foot tall, and has a compact clump of leaves – all of which makes it a great choice for pot growing in any zone. Now northern gardeners can enjoy the beauty of these plants, where each individual flower, like a small lily, is gathered into a ball of beauty. Snow-white, they contrast with the arching leaves, which are strap-like and rich green. These form a dense clump at ground level, so they fit neatly into a pot or larger tub, alone or with other perennials or smaller shrubs. Bringing a sub-tropical look to your garden, it thrives in full sun and is heat and drought tolerant too. Potted plants are easy to overwinter, just keep them dry and in a cool, frost-free place with some light.

  • Perfect globes of pure-white flowers through summer
  • Neat clump of compact, strap-shaped green leaves
  • A great choice for edging beds or for growing in pots
  • Very tolerant of heat and drought
  • Easy to overwinter in colder zones

Grow the Bridal Veil® Agapanthus in full sun, or with a little afternoon shade if you are in a very hot place. It will grow happily in any well-drained soil, even growing in poor, dry, sandy soils and among rocks. Established plants are very heat and drought tolerant, and flower best in poorer, drier conditions, and when crowded in a pot. So don’t repot as long as growth is healthy. Too much water, shade and fertilizer will reduce flower production. It isn’t eaten by deer and almost never has pest or disease problems, so it’s a ‘plant and forget’ situation from zone 7 on. Potted plants up to and including zone 8 should be stored for winter in a frost-free place. Keep them dry during that time, only watering if the leaves begin to shrivel. Light is best, but not essential.
