Big, ruffled and jet black ā what am I? The leaves of the PrimoĀ® Black Pearl Coral Bells, thatās what. The big, 5-inch leaves are round with a flat center and boldly ruffled and fluted edges, wavy and exciting. The color is perhaps the darkest ever ā virtually jet-black in both sun and shade. Plant it with white flowers or light colored foliage for maximum effect, or grow it in a light-colored pot on the steps ā wonderful. Vigorous and fast-growing, it soon sends out an abundance of big leaves, forming a mound up to 12 inches tall, and almost 2 feet across. To top it off, this variety is a prolific flowerer, producing 2-foot stems in abundance, each one carrying almost 500 tiny white flowers from pink buds. These come in early summer, chiefly, but may repeat later, and they are in bloom for weeks and weeks. A superb specimen and certainly the best of all the black coral bells, especially for the size of the leaves.
Grow the PrimoĀ® Black Pearl Coral Bells in morning sun for the strongest coloring, and even in full sun in cold zones. Afternoon shade, or light full shade, are ideal in warmer zones, and this plant enjoys the heat and humidity of the South. Any well-drained soil is perfect, including poor soils, but the maximum growth will be in richer soil with regular watering ā but not too much. Drought tolerant once established. Pests and diseases are rare and deer donāt eat it. Remove spent flower stalks as needed, and clean up dead or damaged leaves in spring, just before new growth begins.
