Prepare yourself for a wonderful surprise when you grow the remarkable Javelin Forte™ Deep Rose Spanish Lavender. Derived from a special species, it doesn’t have the usual slender spikes, instead it has a fatter head with flashy ‘flags’ at the top, twisting and turning like a gypsy dancer. It makes a bushy, rounded plant about 18 inches tall and wide, adding flower spikes on top to bring it to about 2 feet tall. The leaves are flat, broader than other lavenders, gray-green, with that traditional lavender perfume that everyone loves. The abundant flowers are carried on stiff stems, and have a rounded lower part of deep purple, topped by 4 broad petals of bright pink. It’s a fabulous look, and one that will stand our in your Mediterranean-style planting, or anywhere in any garden, it’s that lovely. Easy to grow and very drought tolerant, it is as good in a pot as it is in a garden bed, and makes a stunning edging or low hedge along a path or around a bed. In colder zones, grow in a pot and overwinter it in a cool, bright place indoors.

  • Bold pink flag-like petals above more typical fat purple flowers
  • Lovely gray-green foliage with the classic lavender aroma
  • Grow in a pot to bring that Mediterranean feel to your terrace or patio
  • Gorgeous edging plant for low hedges
  • Can be overwinter indoors if needed

Plant the Javelin Forte™ Deep Rose Spanish Lavender in full sun – the more the better. Plant it in any well-drained soil, even sandy, drier, gravel and poor soils. Established plants have excellent drought tolerance. Hardy in the ground to zone 7, and in a pot to zone 8 or 9. Bury a pot in the ground, or if you bring it into a cool, bright place for the winter, you can grow it in any zone at all. Use a pot with good drainage and a coarse, drier potting soil like cactus soil. Water when the soil is almost completely dry, and keep as dry as possible through winter. Trim lightly after blooming – further flowering often comes over summer – and again in early fall if needed. It isn’t eaten by deer or rabbits, and doesn’t have any pest or disease problems, and it is very easy to grow, taking care of itself pretty well.
