Old-fashioned strawberry plants give you a lot of strawberries (maybe too many!) for a few short weeks, and that is it. Far better to choose a variety like the DelizzĀ® Everbearing Strawberry, which blooms continuously from early-summer right into the fall, giving you a steady supply of oh-so-delicious strawberries to enjoy. The handsome foliage is divided into three round lobes, with silvery hairs along the edges, and in late spring sprays of small, white flowers appear. These soon become baby strawberries, and then delicious, red, ripe ones you can eat fresh, use for shortcake, turn into jam, or bake in muffins ā the choice is yours. This plant can be grown in the ground, but the ideal way is in a hanging basket. Over the season it produces long stems (ārunnersā) that quickly develop into baby plants, as well as more flower sprays throughout summer. This plant has been bred to ignore changes in daylength, so it just keeps on delivering more fruit. You could even bring the basket indoors into a sunny window, and the berries will keep on coming. In the ground, use straw or a plastic mulch to keep the fruit from touching the soil and becoming dirty.
Grow your DelizzĀ® Everbearing Strawberry in full sun, in a rich, moist, but well-drained soil. Roughly neutral pH is best, not too acidic and not too alkaline. It is hardy to zone 6, and enjoys warm climates that are not too dry. Water regularly, as drought will stop fruit production. In a basket or pot use regular potting soil, and feed every two weeks with liquid tomato food. Water pots whenever the soil surface becomes dry. The young plants that grow on stalks can be potted up into new plants that will begin to fruit heavily the next summer, and often in the same year they appear. In late fall, when no more berries are being produced, trim back the foliage to soil level and keep outdoors. In zone 6 bury the pot in the ground.
