Many people love bonsai trees for their dwarf form, but there is also a world of miniature trees that need no special tricks to keep them small. The Blue Pearl Miniature Spruce is like a toy tree ā a tiny ball of short branches with the classic blue needles of Colorado spruce. Growing just an inch a year it will mature at perhaps a foot across and just 6 inches tall ā a true jewel of a plant you will cherish. Grow it in a pocket of a rock garden, in a window box of small evergreens, or in a pot, where you can admire it close-up, and be sure it gets appropriate care. Plants like this are ideal if you just have window boxes, a balcony or a small terrace to garden on, and great for someone who loves plants but can no longer garden in a larger space. You will love watching it go through the seasons, with soft, brilliant blue new growth in spring, more muted tones through summer, and the return of bold silver-blue as winter comes. A true work of Mother Nature, and a jewel of natural beauty.
Grow the Blue Pearl Miniature Spruce in full sun, or with very little shade. It is cold in zone 4 in the ground, and zone 5 in a pot. Grow it in any well-drained soil ā for potted plants choose a blended soil-mix for bonsai trees, or use soil for cacti and succulents. Feed potted trees in spring with half-strength evergreen fertilizer. Deer and rabbits wonāt eat it, and it normally stays free of pests or diseases. Trimming isnāt needed ā it stays naturally dwarf. Note that this plant is not suitable for growing indoors for more than short periods of time, and wonāt enjoy hot rooms.
