Everyone loves hydrangeas, especially those with big, round, heads of flowers. Great summer bloomers, they tolerate more shade than most flowering shrubs, and just need watering to thrive. They also come in a big range of colors, especially blue, pink, and white. Now you probably love them too, but perhaps you don’t have a big garden, and only have room for one or two, or perhaps just a spot where you could put one in a pot. How to choose which color? Well, with the 3-N-1 Hydrangea you don’t need to choose, you can have them all! Yes, this unique shrub has been created out of three different varieties, giving you 3 stunning, basic colors. ‘Basic’ because depending on your soil you could see many more shades on your bush. First of all there is ‘Penny Mac’, a popular variety known for its ability to flower on new shoots, later in the season, as well as older ones. The flowers range from blue, through mauves, into pure pinks. Second is ‘Nikko Blue’, an early-blooming variety with blue to pink flowers. The third variety is ‘Snow Storm’, which, yes, has white blooms in all soils. It is a very prolific bloomer, producing flowers continuously from mid-summer into the fall.
Growing to 6 feet tall and wide within a few years, you will love the continuous display of blooms these varieties give you – all on one bush. No one could ask for more – but more is what you get.
You can grow your 3-N-1 Hydrangea in full sun in colder zones, if the soil is sufficiently moist, or in partial shade, with morning sun and afternoon shade. It will even grow in light, full shade, such as you find at the foot of a north-facing wall, or under open cover of deciduous trees. Grow it in rich, moist soil, which should also be well-drained, not boggy. Add plenty of rich compost when planting – more as mulch is great too. Water your knew plant regularly, and even when mature it might need watering during dry spells. If your soil is acidic you will have a predominance of blue flowers. In neutral soils they will be more mauve and purple. In alkaline soils pink will be the main coloring. By growing in a pot, in suitable soil, you can control the color range. Generally free of pest or disease problems, this is an easy plant to succeed with. No pruning is needed – or advised. Just trim out any dead pieces when you start to see new shoots in spring, and take off dead heads once they become unattractive.
