Nandina, also called sacred bamboo, has become one of the most popular foliage plants for warmer gardens, being a trouble-free and reliable evergreen with a unique look. The Cool Glow® Peach Nandina brings a new dimension, being at its best during fall and winter, and therefore ideal for mild areas, but it also looks striking against a fresh snowfall. It grows moderately-fast into a full, rounded bush about 4 feet tall and wide, perhaps reaching 6 feet in time. The spring and summer leaves are a cool, dark, olive-green, then as cooler weather arrives it turns fabulous shades of oranges, red and stunning peach tones, mainly on the upper and outer leaves. Just when you think the garden is going to sleep, these great colors pop out, and stay looking terrific for 6 months, until replaced by the new, green leaves. This variety rarely flowers, but older plants might put out soft sprays of small white flowers in spring, producing few or no seeds. Use it in all your beds, as it tolerates full sun and partial shade. The unique foliage consists of leaves divided into small leaflets, with some resemblance to bamboo, and a leathery, smooth feel. Fabulous anywhere, and also suitable for a no-maintenance low hedge or border along a blank wall or old fence.
Plant your Cool Glow® Peach Nandina in full sun or partial sun, with good tolerance of significant periods of shade during the day. It will even grow in near full shade, but with grow into a more open plant. Grow it in any well-drained soil, from sand to clay, and from acidic to alkaline – this is an easy plant that fits in almost anywhere. It will benefit from some compost added when planting, and regular watering, but once established it is remarkably drought tolerant, and a real survivor in difficult conditions. Hardy in zone 6, with some winter damage possible – otherwise very tolerant and easy. No trimming or pruning is generally needed – you can keep older plants more compact by removing the tallest canes at ground level. Free of any pest or disease problems and not eaten by deer.
