The cheerleaders will be out in your garden when your White Pom Poms Redbud takes the field. Blooming in early spring – one of the earliest trees to bloom – this unique variety of the native redbud has creamy-white flowers that have multiple petals, losing their normal pea form and turning into fluffy pom-poms. This intensifies the display, making this plant as spectacular as a flowering cherry tree. Forming a broad, upright tree, and growing about 12 inches a year, it matures between 20 and 30 feet tall, spreading to as much as 35 feet, so allow enough room when planting, spacing it at least 15 feet from the house and from property boundaries. Summer brings beautiful green, heart-shaped leaves, turning yellow and orange in fall, and in winter the striking black stems and graceful twigs give it a great profile. A fantastic choice for a lawn specimen, at the back of beds, or along the boundary of areas with larger trees.

  • Unique white blooms have multiple petals, creating a more vibrant look
  • Large, heart-shaped leaves look elegant and graceful through summer
  • Black stems make for a great winter profile
  • A beautiful smaller tree for specimens and woodland planting
  • Easily grown, and adaptable to different conditions

If you are in zone 5, plant your White Pom Poms Redbud where it has some shelter from cold winds, not in an open, isolated spot. In warmer zones provide some afternoon shade, and avoid planting near hot, sun-reflecting walls. Grow it in any well-drained soil, from sand to clay. This plant is especially useful in alkaline, limestone soils, but grows in moderately acidic ones too. Also suitable for poorer soils, as its roots manufacture their own nutrients. Prune it while young into a multi-stem tree, keeping the center free of branches for the most elegant look. Early pruning means no scars on the smooth bark. May need deer protection while young, until the branches grow out of reach, but other pests and diseases are rare. Easy to grow, needing very little attention, but water young plants regularly.
