For pure, stunning beauty in the classic style, look no further than the Duchesse de Nemours Peony. This early bloomer has large, full blooms of pure white, with broad outer petals surrounding a full cluster of inner ones that open pale yellow, turning pure white as they age. The strong stems hold the blooms boldly upright, and the full foliage of this 3-foot plant makes it handsome before and after the blooming season, at the point when spring becomes summer. A classic variety from 19th century France, it captures the beauty of by-gone days, yet looks perfect in a modern garden too. Nothing matches peonies for easy growing, long-life and glorious blooms, and this one is no exception.

  • Large flowers with pure-white petals surrounding a creamy-yellow center
  • Early blooming, at the start of the peony season
  • Durable shrub-like plant with handsome glossy foliage
  • Leaves color yellow and red in fall, before dying for the winter
  • Award of Garden Merit, Royal Horticultural Society

Grow the Duchesse de Nemours Peony in full sun for the most vigorous growth and maximum flowering. It enjoys rich, well-prepared soil that is moist but well-drained. Mulch every year or two in fall with a thick layer of compost over the dormant roots. Cut back flowers to the first leaf once they fade, and cut down the stems to 1-inch tall in late fall, once they have yellowed. Choose the spot carefully when planting, as it cannot easily be transplanted once established, and keep the top of the root no more than 2 inches below the ground. Not eaten by deer or rabbits and rarely suffers from any pest or diseases. Very long-lived.
