For the perfect small, upright, specimen conifer, the Silver Show Korean Fir deserves your serious attention. Poised and balanced, it makes a neat pyramid, maturing around 12 feet tall, with a broad base up to 8 feet wide, growing a generous 6 inches a year. It is perfect for a specimen on a smaller lawn, acting as the center-piece of a bed of smaller evergreens, as a novel outdoor Christmas tree, or in a large rock garden. It does indeed put on a great show of silver foliage, because the needles are rolled upwards, giving the branches a dense, rounded look, and that exposes the bright silver undersides of the needles. Silver, not blue, so it has a very unique look. As well, unlike many dwarf evergreens, it produces many cones. These are 2 to 3 inches tall, standing upright along the branches. They are purple when young, turning brown when mature, and give a fabulous decorative look that’s great for months and months. You could grow this tree in a pot too, and use it for winter decoration outside your doorway, or on a terrace. A fabulously different tree, perfect for those who love neat, special plants.

  • Perfect upright pyramid to 12 feet tall
  • Curled needles reveal their silver undersides, and create circular branches
  • Produces an abundance of upright purple cones
  • Excellent choice for a specimen, in a pot, or among shrubs
  • Good choice for colder parts of the country, with excellent cold resistance

The Silver Show Korean Fir will be best planted in full sun, but it could also take a few hours of shade each day. It grows best in regions with cooler summers, and won’t do well in the heat and humidity of the southeast. Grow it in moist, well-drained soil, preferably neutral to acidic. Improve the soil with plenty of compost or similar materials, especially if you have clay soil, which is not so suitable for this species. You don’t need to trim to keep the perfect dwarf form of this tree, but if you want to keep it even more compact, shorten the new shoots once they have matured in spring. This encourages new buds and shorter stems. It isn’t bothered by rabbits or deer, and generally stays pest and disease-free.
