If you like your garden plants to be unique and special, then the Manyō-no-sato Japanese Maple is going to satisfy that like – and win you lots of likes from your gardening friends too. This very special plant grows into a small tree or larger shrub, that will be about 8 feet tall within 10 years. But it isn’t the size that will win you over, it’s the remarkable transformations the leaves pass through with the seasons. New spring growth is a deep purple-red, with the leaf edges variegated in creamy yellow when very new, turning to pistachio green. As the summer approaches the leaf centers turn to a softer purple, and gradually, especially in warm climates, the leaves turn rich green by mid-summer. The extent to which the leaves green depends on light exposure and temperatures. When fall arrives, they turn a spectacular orange-red, vibrant and bright, glowing across your garden. It’s a real seasonal kaleidoscope of colors, all from a single tree. Always photogenic, the leaves of course are deeply divided in classic Japanese maple style. A fantastic choice for a prime-location garden specimen, for a courtyard or large planter, a bonsai, and of course for your Japanese-themed garden.

  • Constantly changing leaf colors through the seasons
  • Deep purple-red spring leaves with yellow-green edges
  • Softer purple in summer, tending to uniform green
  • Vibrant orange-red for a colorful fall display
  • A unique variety for that special place in your garden

Plant your Manyō-no-sato Japanese Maple where it has some morning sun, and shade later in the day. It will also grow in light, broken shade, such as beneath deciduous trees/ Plant it in soil you have enriched with plenty of compost – the soil should be moist but well-drained. This plant isn’t drought tolerant, so use more compost as mulch, and water regularly, especially when newly planted. Thrives in acidic soils, but tolerates neutral and slightly alkaline ones as well. Not recommended for very alkaline soil. Generally free of pests or diseases, and easy to grow if moisture, soil and light are correct. Prune as needed – for a tree-like form remove lower branches and internal twiggy growth gradually, but early in its life, to avoid scarring the trunk.
