Snow Hill Meadow Sage

When we think about the beautiful flowering sages we can grow in our gardens, it is usually their special blue and purple colors we have in mind. White, though, is just as special a color as blues – it too mixes with everything, and brings light and joy to your plantings, while also emphasizing the richness of the plant colors around it. Since meadow or woodland sages are so easy to grow, why not turn to them for white? Specifically, the Snow Hill Sage, which has beautiful spikes of pure-white flowers from late fall all through summer. Standing just a foot or two tall, bushy and upright, this easy-care plant makes a great accent in your perennial plantings, and works perfectly in a rock garden or retaining wall too. As appropriate in a formal setting as it is edging a woodland or participating in a meadow planting, it also works great in planter boxes, mixing with just about anything, from small shrubs to annual flowers. So when you think ‘white’, think the Snow Hill Sage, an avalanche of white beauty.

Plant the Snow Hill Sage in full sun or with just a hour or two of shade. It is happy in any well-drained soil, of all types, including drier, sandy soils, although growth will be best with regular moisture in spring. It isn’t eaten by rabbits or by deer, and rarely if ever has pests or diseases. Snip out the flower spikes (leaving the leaves) as they fade – this will keep new blooms coming week after week. In late fall cut right to the ground – new shoots will come back the next spring. After a few years it is easily divided in spring or fall.
