For an easy-care, summer-blooming shrub that is always gorgeous, look no further than the Violet Satin® Hardy Hibiscus. Also called Rose of Sharon, these relatives of the tropical hibiscus are cold-resistant and so very easy to grow. A great plant if you are new to gardening, you are assured of abundant blooms right through the summer months with this beautiful choice. The huge flowers, over 5 inches across, are a stunning shade of rich violet-purple, beautifully accented by a star-shaped deep-red center. Every branch is smothered in a succession of blooms, opening faithfully every morning. Forming a well-shaped shrub between 8 and 12 feet tall, depending on where you garden and how much you prune, it is a great choice to fill a blank corner, or as an eye-catching specimen out on the lawn. Grow it behind smaller shrubs, or make a fantastic flowering hedge out of it, giving privacy and beauty all in one.

  • Hundreds of blooms, each over 5 inches across
  • Blooms non-stop right through summer
  • Gorgeous violet-purple blossoms with a red center
  • Cold tolerant right through zone 5
  • Drought and heat tolerant – it loves that sunshine

The Violet Satin® Hardy Hibiscus will perform best out in full sun, and it will grow in almost any soil, even poor, sandy and rocky ones. Just don’t plant in wet or boggy areas – good drainage is important. Once established it is very drought tolerant, but does appreciate a deep soak during extended dry periods. Deer don’t bother with it and it never seems to have any pest or disease problems. A great choice for new gardeners, and a shrub you can’t go wrong with. Naturally well-branched, it can be left to just grow, or pruned in early spring as needed to keep it a little smaller.
