The Hardy Hibiscus, or Rose of Sharon, is a great shrub for late blooming, and grows well even in zone 5. For unbeatable brilliance and beauty, the Azurri Blue Satin® Hardy Hibiscus is the new variety to go for – stunning, enormous blooms of the richest blue possible, most pronounced when in bud and newly open, and accented in the open bloom by a purple-red center that feathers out into the blue petals. Plus, this is a non-seeding variety, so it blooms for much longer, and doesn’t produce awkward seedlings sprouting among your other plants, or spreading into natural areas nearby. This is a vigorous shrub, forming a substantial bush at least 8 feet tall and 6 feet wide within a few seasons, and ultimately growing to as much as 12 feet in warmer zones. It will remain much smaller if hard-pruned in spring, or grown in a planter. Use it in the background, to fill large blank spaces, or out on a lawn. It also makes an incredible screen, blocking unsightly views, wind and noise, forming an unbelievable floral barrier of enormous beauty.

  • Large, showy flowers over 4 inches across
  • Abundant blooming right through the summer
  • Large, well-branched shrub ideal for screening
  • Produces no seeds, so flowering continues in abundance
  • Easy to grow, drought tolerant and fully hardy in zone 5

Plant your Azurri Blue Satin® Hardy Hibiscus is full sun, giving it enough room for its mature size. It grows well in any well-drained soil, including poor soils, sandy soils and urban gardens. It’s very tough, growing in adverse conditions once established, and drought tolerant too. During extended dry periods a deep soaking will keep it blooming like crazy. Self-cleaning, the dead flowers just fall off, and the lack of seeding means flowers just keep coming and coming. It isn’t eaten by deer and has no pests or diseases to worry about. Prune as needed in spring, to control the size and to encourage multiple branches. Quickly recovers from hard trimming and blooms on new shoots.
