Red Double Begonia Bulbs

For spectacular summer flowers, in pots or in your beds, you can’t beat the Double Begonia, The handsome glossy foliage, of angular leaves with prominent veins, is the perfect backdrop for the huge, frilly flowers, at least 3 inches across, packed with hundreds of thick petals. Choose from yellow, white, red, orange or pink, and bring your garden to life with exuberant color. Other nurseries sell dry roots, that then have to be nursed to life, but you will receive a healthy plant that is already growing vigorously, and probably flowering, ready for you to plant and enjoy. These plants are incredibly versatile. You can grow them in hanging baskets, window boxes, or regular pots. Plant them directly in the garden for the summer, perhaps at the top of a wall, where their hanging habit can be appreciated, or in raised beds. They will bloom profusely all through summer and well into fall, until stopped by frost. They also make colorful and attractive houseplants, ideal for a bright spot anywhere, loving kitchens and bathrooms best, for the humidity. Store dry roots indoors over winter and then start them up again next spring. Double the pleasure and double the blooms, vastly superior to ordinary annual begonias, your Double Begonias will be the queens of your summer garden.

The Double Begonia grows best in a spot with morning sun and afternoon shade, although in colder zones full sun is possible too. They will also grow in light full shade, but may flower less. Plant in rich, moist soil in pots or planters, preferably raised up so that the hanging stems can be admired best. Use a regular potting soil in pots with drainage, and feed regularly with water-soluble fertilizer for flowering plants, or tomato food. Let the top of the pot dry out between each watering, and try not to wet the surface of the root. These plants are cold-hardy to zone 8. In colder zones allow the soil to gradually dry in fall, and remove the dry roots, storing in a cool place in a paper bag with a little dry peat moss or wood shavings. Re-pot in early spring, placing outdoors once the danger of frost has passed.
