Creeping phlox are a wonderful feature in the spring garden, and should be grown in profusion. After all, even when not in bloom the low, dense mat of light-green foliage and needle-like leaves is at least as attractive as a spreading juniper. Nothing looks more lovely than a selection of different colors of these plants, and in any selection the Purple Beauty Creeping Phlox should be at the top of the list. The wonderful clarity and beauty of its light purple flowers is delightful, and you can see it every spring, bigger and more abundant than the year before. So dense are the flowers that the foliage becomes invisible for the month when this plant is in bloom, and spilling over a rock or edging a bed it is pure joy to see. Spreading to about 18 inches across, and just 4 or 5 inches tall, it can be grown in a rock garden or the levels of retaining walls, or where a bed meets a path or paved terrace.
Grow the Purple Beauty Creeping Phlox in full sun, in any well-drained soil, including poorer soils and alkaline ones. Add a little organic material when planting, and water regularly for the first few months – after that it is generally drought-resistant, but does appreciate a drink during long periods of dryness. Untroubled by deer, rabbits, pests or diseases, this is a very easy, low-maintenance plant. Trim lightly with shears as soon as flowering is over. In a few weeks it will be covered again in dense, fresh foliage, and will bloom even more prolifically the next spring. Don’t trim at other times of year.
