Traditional varieties of coneflowers are wonderful, but they have two problems. One is size, since those 3-foot stems can look too big in some settings, and they tend to open up and flop after a couple of weeks. The second is the wonderful rosy-purple color – wonderful, but not ideal if you have a lot of yellows and oranges in your garden. That’s why we welcomed the arrival of the Sombrero® Adobe Orange Coneflower. Not only is it a superb shade of glowing orange, like captured sunlight filtered through orange juice, it is more compact, just 2 feet tall, very uniform for mass planting, flowering over a long period, and just simply drop-dead gorgeous. Plant it among gold, orange and blue perennials for a knock-out look that will have you doing the hat dance; flow it down a slope or bank; edge big beds with it; or plant it in containers and boxes. ‘Superb’ just about sums it up.
Plant the Sombrero® Adobe Orange Coneflower in full sun for good results. Grow it any well-drained soils, from richer soil in garden beds to rough meadow ground. Established plants are drought resistant, and deer, pests and diseases don’t trouble it. Grows well in urban settings and wildflower gardens – it’s a native plant in origin. Simply cut down the flowering stalks at some time between late fall and early spring – nothing more is needed – the leaves just rot away if you don’t bother to gather them.
