What is the King’s Gold Cypress Like?
The King’s Gold Cypress is a rounded conifer evergreen, growing steadily to about 3 feet tall and wide, and in time possibly double that. It stays dense and full, with spreading branches ending in narrow, thread-like shoots that arch over and hang down, creating a soft, mounding look. Those stems keep their rich golden-yellow coloring all year round, with no greening or browning in summer or winter. It draws your eye from anywhere across the garden, and it looks great tucked among green bushes, making an exciting focal point. It looks good too among rocks, boulders and gravel, or on the terraces of a retaining wall. It is small enough to live for many, many years in a pot or planter, and it’s a popular plant to turn into a bonsai of any size. How Do You Grow the King’s Gold Cypress?
It turns out that the King’s Gold Cypress is very easy to grow, all the way from the harsh winters of zone 4 to the heat of zone 9. It has exceptional resistance to hot and humid conditions, but it takes icy winters too. Grow it in full sun for the strongest color – it won’t scorch like many other golden plants do – and it also grows well in partial shade. It needs no trimming to stay neat and dense. Ordinary garden soil is fine, and a little water during long dry spells is all it takes to grow this trouble-free plant to perfection – ‘Low-maintenance’ is the key word.
