The Omato Japanese Maple is a unique variety, with large, 4-inch leaves divided into 5 to 7 lobes. The spring leaves are richly tinted with bright orange on a pale green background, and in the summer the leaves are a beautiful rich green. In fall the leaves turn a uniform brilliant scarlet, one of the brightest of all the Japanese maples. This robust tree grows to 20 feet tall, and it makes an excellent shade tree or specimen for a smaller garden, replacing such trees as red maple and oak, which would grow too large.

  • Large, sun-resistant leaves
  • Lovely orange tones in spring
  • Powerful bright red leaves in fall
  • Larger, heavier-limbed tree ideal as a small shade tree
  • Resistant to both cold and heat

Able to tolerate lots of sun, the Omato Japanese Maple is a great choice for full sun in cooler zones. In zones 8 and 9 some afternoon shade is valuable. This tree thrives in moist, well-drained rich soil, and it should be watered regularly during hot and dry weather when young. Well-established trees have moderate drought resistance once established, and this tree does not scorch and shrivel as other Japanese maples can do. Pests or diseases are normally not an issue, and this tree is easier to grow than many other varieties.
