Golden leaves are always exciting additions to the garden, brightening it in ways that white doesn’t do. When it comes to near-solid gold in hosta plants, there are not very many. For one that consistently wins awards and receives top ratings, you can’t go wrong with the Stained Glass Hosta. The large leaves have a rich density and substance, and they are a brilliant golden yellow, highlighted by a slim margin of lime-green. This is a larger plant, rising almost 2 feet tall and spreading 3 to 4 feet wide. Big enough for a specimen anywhere, it is also perfect for larger mass-plantings, like a sea of gold spilling down a slope or carpeting the ground under trees. It also has outstanding flowers – large, white and strongly fragrant – that are an extra benefit. Plus, this plant is one of a select group that don’t need much winter cold, and so will grow well in hot zones, where most hosta fail after a year or two.
Partial shade or light full shade are best for the Stained Glass Hosta, which will be a little greener if the light levels are very low. Plant in rich, moist, well-drained soil and water regularly. Slow to emerge in spring, but soon fills in. Rarely troubled by pests or diseases and very easy to grow. Cut down the leaves and old flower stems once the cold weather kills them. In warm zones it may stay in leaf till the end of the year. Grows well in hot zones, needed almost no winter chilling.
