Perhaps it’s the long, almost feathery blue-green needles. Perhaps it’s the tight, upright branching and natural conical shape. It could be the fast growth that soon gives you a tree of substance and quality. Maybe it’s the ‘presence’ of this tree, bringing height without width to tight spots in your garden. Whatever the reason, there is something very impressive about the Upright Eastern White Pine that makes it a great garden tree, and a striking exclamation point in any landscape. Adding 15 to 18 inches of height each year, this striking plant soon reaches 25 feet tall and eventually probably 40 feet, with a width of between 8 and 12 feet only. It may start out looking a bit shrubby, but it soon develops its mature flame-shaped beauty, with many upright branches making a substantial yet slender tree you will love. Cold resistant and tolerant of city conditions, this is an easy tree to succeed with, and you will love the softness of the needles, up to 5 inches long, a beautiful soft blue-green color, that cover every stem and keep this tree green almost to ground level for many years. A truly magnificent small tree with a presence far greater than the space it takes up.

  • Striking exclamation point that is fast-growing to around 30 feet tall
  • Beautiful long, blue-green needles are soft to the touch
  • Great presence with only a small area taken up
  • Grows from zone 3 to zone 8 in a wide variety of conditions
  • Trouble-free and happy in urban gardens

The Upright Eastern White Pine prefers moist, well-drained, richer soils, but it is very undemanding and will grow well across a wide range of garden conditions. Grows in poorer, dry soils too, and in urban gardens. It’s hardy in zone 3 and grows right down into zone 8. Remove any small dead branches, which could be an early indicator of white pine blister rust disease – but otherwise this tree is trouble free and easy to grow. Trimming isn’t needed – just let it develop its natural form, which may take a couple of years to develop.
