Few sights are as striking and gorgeous as purple flowers blooming among golden fall leaves. You can have that romantic look so easily, with Wood’s Purple Aster. A compact perennial forming a mound of stems about 18 inches high, it is covered through the fall with bright star-like flowers of a warm, soft purple that glow like jewels in the fall sunlight. It makes the perfect ending to another season, and gives us just that extra blooming that seems to keep summer still going. Easy to grow at the front of shrub or perennial beds, along a path or in a pot to stand by the door, this great plant, and it’s companions Wood’s Pink and Wood’s Blue, are essential in your garden if you believe in keeping flowers coming for as long as possible – and who doesn’t want that?
Choose a sunny place to plant Wood’s Purple Aster – that will give the best blooming. It prefers richer, moist, well-drained soils, but this tough little plant will grow in most places, and tolerate a moderate amount of drought too, as well as growing in wet soil. It isn’t bothered by deer or rabbits, and takes salt-spray too, so can grow in coastal areas. In late fall or early spring, cut back the old flower stems to the ground, leaving any leaves that have sprouted from the base. After a few years, work a mixture of soil and compost into the base of the plant and among the mat of stems, to rejuvenate it.
