The Twisted Hinoki Cypress is a beautiful and exotic shrub for any garden. It is easy to grow, yet it brings quality and uniqueness to the space it grows in. This plant will grow into a broad upright shrub, reaching 5 feet in 10 years, and eventually 10 or more feet in height. It is almost as broad as it is tall, and makes an imposing specimen among other shrubs, as an isolated specimen, or as part of a collection of exotic conifers. As it is slower growing, it can also be used in planter boxes and containers, where its special qualities can be appreciated close up. The normal foliage of the Hinoki cypress is soft and full, but in the Twisted form it is pressed close to the stems, which twist around in all directions. Often the ends of the branches are flattened and ridged, like cockscombs. This exciting foliage gives the tree a very special texture and turns the ordinary into something unique.
The Twisted Hinoki Cypress will grow in any well-drained garden soil. It will grow in full sun happily, or in light shade. It is hardy to almost minus 30, so it grows in most of zone 4, yet it also grows well in hotter areas, all the way through zone 8. It thrives in both rainy and dry regions, and once established, these plants are very resistant to drought. It has no significant pests or diseases, it needs no trimming or special care, yet this low-maintenance exotic and rare plant will bring something very special to any garden space.
