The Pocahontas Canadian Lilac is a deciduous shrub growing over 10 feet tall, and almost as wide, with a rounded bushy form. In spring it is smothered with fragrant blooms, flowering a week to ten days before the common lilac does. The rich reddish-purple flowers are clustered in 5-inch trusses of many blooms, making a spectacular display. Grow it as an informal screen, as a lawn specimen, around your house, or at the back of your garden beds. In fall the leaves turn beautiful shades of purple-red and bronze, adding a second season of interest to this great plant.
The Pocahontas Canadian Lilac is especially hardy, thriving in zones 2 and 3, and all the way into zone 7. It grows best in full sun, but it will tolerate a little partial shade too. Almost all soils are suitable, except for wet, badly-drained ones, and this tough hybrid plant is very easy to grow. It rarely has pests or diseases, and it doesn’t suffer from the powdery mildew that disfigures other lilacs in summer. Remove the flowers soon after they finish blooming, and prune some of the oldest branches back at the same time. This easy-care shrub is perfect for busy gardeners.
