Ruby Spice Summersweet

The Ruby Spice Summersweet is a handsome, upright deciduous native shrub, growing to about 5 feet tall. Its glossy green leaves are bronzy in spring and yellow in fall, and it always looks healthy and fresh. It has a very long flowering season starting in July, when many other shrubs are finished blooming. The upright spikes of cherry-pink blooms make a cheerful display for weeks and weeks, attracting butterflies and hummingbirds to your garden. Even the brown seed-pods are attractive, and this low-maintenance shrub is perfect in garden beds or natural settings

With a wide tolerance, the Ruby Spice Summersweet will grow from full sun to full shade, preferring some afternoon shade in hotter zones. It grows well in all soils, but best in damp areas, including wet soil, and not so well in very alkaline soils. It normally has no pests or diseases and it’s ignored by deer. Very little attention is needed, and any trimming should be done in late winter or early spring.
