Flowers and Plants for Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day is held in the USA, and in many other countries, on the second Sunday in May. It is a day when we honor our own mothers, the mothers who are the parents of our children, and motherhood in general. Mothers are the heroes of society, who create the generations that will follow us, and their efforts in raising children deserve to be honored. They preserve the values we as a society hold dear, and that create the very fabric of our freedoms. It is natural and right that they should be honored with outings, restaurant visits, and most importantly, carefully chosen gifts that reflect their interests and loves.
Plants are the Ideal Mother’s Day Gift!
Mother’s Day is also about spring – the season of birth on farms, and the return of leaves and flowers after the long, dark days of winter. We hold this day at this time of year because there is a connection between spring and motherhood. The blooming of plants is a big signal that spring has returned, so it makes a lot of sense to give plants at that time. A bouquet of flowers is traditional, but how much better is a live plant for the garden? Something that will thrive and return each year better and better, a constant reminder of that honoring.
As well, many mothers are also gardeners, and love their gardens. As children we may have played in our mother’s garden, and have deep memories of the flowers, trees and insects in them. So it is only natural to draw that connection with a Gift Plant. A plant for a gardener shows you know and understand their love of plants, and also gives them a long-term memory to cherish.
Sadly, some of us cannot be with our mothers on this day, but the arrival of an unexpected delivery, that turns out to be a tree or shrub for the garden, is bound to make up in some part for your absence. Planting a tree or bush is a powerful gesture, and it speaks of hope for the future, and a belief in the good things that lie ahead in life. It is a positive thing, just as being a mother is likely the most positive thing that anyone can be. If you cannot be there to plant that tree or bush on Mother’s Day, it still makes a gesture of permanence and continuity across the generations, which is another core message in celebrating Mother’s Day.
Choosing a Plant for Mother’s Day
The best plants for Mother’s Day are plants that connect in some way with the ideas surrounding the day. Plants with deep connections to ideas of home, such as Lilac bushes, Roses, or if you are from warmer states, Azaleas. All these plants speak of homelife, and may be fragrant too, raising deep memories within us.
More practical gardening mothers may want to plant a new hedge, or a tree, and those too make great gifts – the important thing is to choose something that connects with your mother, and that you know she will love. Perhaps your mother has no garden, but everyone has a room where a houseplant can grow, and that too makes a great gift.
Of course, not everyone with a gardening parent is also a gardener, and you may be in that awkward position of knowing your mother would love a plant but having no idea at all of what she would like. Rather than taking your chances, at The Tree Center we have a simple solution. Our Gift Cards, with values from as low as $50, up to $500, leave the choosing up to your mother, so you will never get the choice wrong. The are instantly delivered, so even if you are reading this on Mother’s Day, looking for a gift with meaning, she will receive it in a few moments, and you won’t miss the chance. Freedom of choice, and instant delivery – what could be better?
Our Mother’s Day Plant Selection
These trees have been chosen by our expert staff because they really have something special about them – making them perfect for gift giving.
Immortalized by Walt Whitman in the lines of his poem, “When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom’d”, Lilac bushes have strong connections with the security of home, and are universally loved, so what better Mother’s Day Gift Plant could there be?
Whether you choose a traditional large flowering lilac, with those classic curving flower clusters, or a more compact variety, everyone loves the look and fragrance of lilacs. You can choose the fragrant Tinkerbelle® Lilac, growing just 5 feet tall, and ideal for a small garden or planter, or the larger Miss Kim Lilac. A great choice would be the Bloomerang Purple Lilac, with rich fragrance, classic deep purple blossoms, and a return blooming in summer, extending the pleasure as no other lilac can.
When it comes to vibrant colors, Azalea Bushes have it hands down. Their beautiful flowers are strongly associated with springtime, and in areas where they can be grown outdoors there can be nothing better for a Mother’s Day Gift Plant than one of these evergreen bushes. There are hundreds of varieties to choose from, but the Encore Azaleas are where everyone is going currently, because they have the amazing bonus of blooming not just in spring, but again from mid-summer right into fall.
At The Tree Center we have more than a dozen varieties to choose from – everything from the pure white of Autumn Angel to the rich red of Autumn Fire, the pink of Autumn Princess, or the varying shades of Autumn Twist. Check out our collections – maybe enough for a whole bed would be appropriate.
Even if your mother doesn’t have the suitable soil and climate needed for these beautiful shrubs, they make great potted plants too, for a cool sunporch or window, so don’t be put off – everyone can grow an azalea.
Related to azaleas, and also suitable for the garden and pots, are the Rhododendron Bushes. These have larger blooms in large clusters, and if your mother’s garden is too cool for azaleas, then consider some Rhododendron Bushes like Nova Zembla, with red blooms, or Lemon Ice, whose white blooms have a golden heart. These varieties are hardy even in zone 4, and they both are great choices for the rhododendron lover who lives in cooler zones.
A unique variety that makes a great Mother’s Day Gift Plant is the Everred Rhododendron, which features not just vibrant-red bell-shaped blossoms, but red foliage that makes a great display even when flowering is over. It turns a spring-blooming plant into an all-year splash of color – a great gift.
These are another group of plants we find especially popular with mothers, and no wonder. They bloom for weeks and weeks, and their large heads of flowers really bring a splash of color to the late summer garden. Many, like the Bobo Hydrangea, are small enough to grow in pots, if your mother has no room for a larger bush. At The Tree Center we have a very large selection of these ever-popular bushes. Depending on where your mother gardens, you can choose from the classic Mop-head Hydrangea bushes, which grow from zone 5 or 6, or the tougher Panicle Hydrangeas, which grow even in zone 3, as well as much further south. For the coveted blue hydrangea, we recommend Nikko Blue. For something different, take a look at the unique Tiny Tuff Stuff® Mountain Hydrangea, with fascinating flat lilac flower heads.
There is something special about roses – everyone’s favorite flower. A rose bush is sure to be a gift tree that every mother will love. We always have a big selection available, but consider one of the Knockout Roses, which are much easier to grow than many traditional ones, and bloom and bloom without ever giving up. They are disease-resistant too, so all that fussy care is a thing of the past. You can’t go wrong with a rose – check out our current selection.
As well, among our New Arrivals is a whole range of the fabulous Drift Roses. These have tiny flowers, but a profusion of them, and they never stop blooming. They are lower growing, making them ideal for a small garden, the front of a bed, or planter boxes. They come in a whole spectrum of colors, and we recommend them highly.
Finally, consider the Gardenia Bush, which fills the air with its amazing perfume. Although most only grow in the warmer zones, some, like Kleim’s Hardy Gardenia, or the Frost Proof Gardenia, can be grown in zone 7. These are great gifts for the green thumb plant lover, as they do take a little extra care, but they will be adored by many mothers, and really show you care.
