Citrus fruits are so useful, and there are so many varieties that you almost need a citrus orchard to have what you need. If you have a small garden, or you need to grow citrus indoors in winter, then that is not possible. We can’t give you an orchard, but we can give you two trees in one, with our Citrus Medley range, which combines two different fruits on one single tree – twice the variety in the same space. From this Citrus Medley bush you will harvest the very special Meyer Lemon, loved by gourmet cooks for its unique flavor, sweeter and milder than regular lemons. It is ideal for baking, lemonades and ‘grown-up’ drinks too. With it, on the same bush, is the Persian Lime, the classic lime fruit, green and tangy, to make sorbets, drinks and creamy pies too. If you want different choices, we also offer you a Citrus Medley plant with the fabled Key Lime combined with the attractive Variegated Lemon, which produces pink fruit ideal for pink lemonade. These trees make a perfect pair, so take one of each and have many choices from just two small bushes.
These two unique plants grow from the same trunk of the Medley Bush, so it is just like growing one tree, but with a double harvest. You can plant your tree outdoors if you live in zone 9 or in an even warmer area. Choose a sunny spot, with well-drained soil. If you are not sure about the drainage, plant your tree on a low mound, since citrus trees do not like to be in wet soil constantly.
If you live in a cooler area, this is not a problem, since your tree can easily be grown in a pot. Since these trees are naturally small and shrubby, they are ideal for pot culture. Choose a large pot with a drainage hole, and use a general outdoor potting soil, or a special citrus tree soil, which is often available at larger garden centers. Keep the tree indoors when temperatures outdoors are below 45 degrees, and keep it outdoors for the rest of the year. Choose the sunniest spots you can find, both indoors and outdoors, for the best growth. Use a citrus fertilizer regularly, and shorten any very long branches that might grow from your tree. Do not allow any branches to grow from below the point where the existing branches begin.
The Meyer Lemon was grown originally in China, and brought to America by Frank Meyer, an ‘agricultural plant explorer’ who travelled in China at the beginning of the 20th century. What makes the Meyer Lemon special is its distinct flavor. It is sweeter and not so acidic as ordinary lemons. The fruit is more rounded and yellower than a normal lemon, with a thin skin and so it has a greater volume of juice. It is naturally a small tree, so it is perfect for a Medley tree to grow in a pot. The leaves are oval, evergreen, glossy and dark green in color. The tree normally flowers in spring, with beautiful, white, richly-scented flowers that will fill your porch or garden with a sweet perfume. The fruits develop slowly over summer and they will be ready to pick during the winter months, from November to March, when that sweet, lemon flavor, a reminder of summer, can be used in drinks, cakes, cookies or desserts.
The Persian Lime tree has a similar appearance to the lemon it shares the Medley Bush with. It is mostly when the fruits develop that you will notice the difference. The Persian Lime is the classic green lime that is so versatile in the kitchen. From distinctive sorbets and mousses, to pies and cocktails, you will have so many uses for this fruit in the kitchen you will be constantly visiting your tree. The fruits are large, with no seeds, and they last well if you need to store them for a time. The branches have no thorns, so this is a great plant if you have small children who will want to pick the fruit.
At the Tree Center we are thrilled to have found a supply of these rare Citrus Medley Trees, and we know our customers will be thrilled too. We tried to find as much stock as we could, but sadly the supplies of these trees are limited, because of the skill needed to produce them. Order now while we still have stocks, as this could be a unique opportunity that will not be repeated for some time.
